Official figures, with their sources
Every figure on this page comes from the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War unless another source is named. Where figures overlap or cannot be reconciled, we say so instead of adding them together.
Running total of people returned
After the 76th exchange on June 26, 2026, the Headquarters gave a running total of 9,606 Ukrainian military personnel and civilians returned through exchanges.
Returns announced since then: 103 service members on August 19, 10 service members on August 24, and 270 people (261 service members and nine civilians) on October 23. The Headquarters will publish its own updated total, and we will post it here when it does. We do not add these figures to the June total ourselves, because the Headquarters counts some returns outside exchanges separately.
The combined exchange of August to October 2026
Stage one, August 19: 103 service members. Stage two, August 24: ten service members previously listed as missing in action. Stage three, October 23: 270 people, including five survivors of the Olenivka attack, 38 officers and nine civilians. Stage counts are not separate exchange numbers.
Fallen defenders returned
Repatriations of remains are counted separately from people returned alive. See every repatriation we have documented. The Headquarters reports remains returned, which the Russian side says are Ukrainian servicemen. Identification is carried out afterward by Ukrainian investigators and forensic experts, so a count of remains is not a count of identified persons.
People still held
On October 22, 2026 the Headquarters said about 1,500 Ukrainians face criminal prosecution in Russia without any official confirmation of their captivity by the International Committee of the Red Cross. See Still in Captivity.
